Words to Live By Since 1993 A SPIFF Publication Vol. 2, No. 5 We're sick of Hillary. Is that covered under the CCCP? And He Said "Change" Only Nine Times! After listening to Bill deliver President Clinton's State of the Union extravaganza and picking ourselves up off the Spiff Executive Plaza floor, we realized that some honest clarifications might be needed and some policy questions should be asked of the administration. So, here are some excerpts from the speech and some Spiff comments and questions. We must return to the principle that if we give ordinary people equal opportunity, quality education, and a fair shot at the American dream, they will do extraordinary things. Who are "We" and why are "We" giving things to the American people that they can get for themselves? For thirty years, family life in America has been breaking down. For twenty years, the wages of working families have been stagnant, or declining. For twelve years of trickle-down economics, we tried to build a false prosperity on a hollow base. Do we really need to go over this again? You know the truth. From 1989 to 1992, we experienced the slowest growth in a half century. Growth of 2.8% in 1993-slower than during George Bush's term. But keep trying, Bill; 43% of us believe you. One year ago I asked you to join me and accept responsibility for the future of our country. Such as passing the buck for Travelgate, Waco, Haircuts, Failed Nominations, etc. This Congress produced: A budget that cut the deficit by half a trillion dollars.... Lie! We all know that the Clinton taxes will add one trillion dollars to the debt. ...cut spending (Lie) and raised income taxes only on the very wealthiest Americans. The key word here is "income." Notice there was no mention of the gas and diesel taxes. Tell this "wealthiest Americans" balderdash to our small businesses. Tax cuts to help nine out of ten small businesses invest more and create jobs. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Oh, sorry. That wasn't a joke, was it? A new law, the Motor Voter bill, to help millions of [dead] people register to vote. Vote early and often. These accomplishments were all commitments I made when I sought this office So was our middle class tax cut, a promise to eliminate the daffuhzit in five years, and a promise not to raise taxes to "pay for these programs." "Don't you ever think that what you do up here doesn't make a difference." Well, we agree with that. Unfortunately, it's all bad. Many Americans still haven't felt the impact of what we have done. Translation: We haven't sucked all of the taxes we can get out of the people. To create more and better [government] jobs... We froze domestic spending, and used honest numbers. How can you use the word "honest" in an absolute lie? Led by the Vice President, we launched a campaign to reinvent government. The Congressional Budget Office, whose numbers Bill says we should trust, has revised Owl Gore's estimated savings down to $305 million from the billions he claimed we would save. By the time we have finished, the federal bureaucracy will be at its lowest level in thirty years. But its control over our lives will be at its highest level ever. Because the deficit was so large and because they had benefited from tax cuts in the 1980s, [Lie] we asked the wealthy to pay more to reduce the deficit. Blah, blah, blah! Aren't you just sick of this garbage! So April 15th, the American people will discover the truth about what we did last year on taxes. Screeeech! Hold it! He didn't plan it, but Bill actually slammed into the truth. We're sure it won't happen again. The naysayers said our plan wouldn't work. Well, they were wrong. The "plan" has been in effect for less than four months. And our economy has produced 1.6 million private sector jobs in 1993. Bill forgot to mention the 600,000 manufacturing jobs lost in the past four months. The people who supported this economic plan should be proud of its first results. And afraid for their jobs.... Tune in again next week, when we hear Bill say, "Let's be honest." The Spiff Response You heard Bill give the State of the Union Lies and you heard the Republican response. Now, uncut and without commercial interruption, The Spiff Response: Balderdash! Well, ok, we will be more specific. Every thing Bill said in over one hour can be condensed into one word, "government." Here, you will find that the line that divides us from them. No matter what the problem, the Clintonites believe that there is always a government solution. That is why you get tax bills, stimulus packages, and hostile takeovers of 7% of the American economy in the form of the Clinton Comprehensive Care Plan (CCCP). That is why you get millions of dollars in television ads, telling kids to party down as long as they use a condom. That is why the top 90 spenders in the House of Representatives are all Democrats. That is why Bill must go before the nation, lie about his true positions on issues, then hold on as the polls plummet to get his agenda passed. Unfortunately, his message of more government control finds a receptive audience with some people. Those people actually believe that government can solve the problems that government has created. They say that we should let President Clinton take over health care and then judge the results. News flash: when her plan fails, we will not be able to reverse it. Just like we have not been able to reverse the dependence on welfare and the states' dependence on government pork. Representatives and Senators are no longer elected to serve the will of the people. The tax bill debate taught us that. They are elected to change the direction of the government money flow. The longer they are in Congress, the more power they gain and the more bacon they bring home. Of this there can be no doubt. Eventually, as they did in the late 1970s, the people will see that freedom and individual responsibility are too high a price to pay for the promise of security from some cheap politician and the pendulum will swing back. We hope the swing will come this year. Quote of the weak: "The one word that best describes Bill Clinton is 'courageous.'" Bob Thomas Quote of the strong: "If President Clinton [sic] is serious about family values, I hope he will join with us in enacting a constitutional amendment to return prayer to the public schools. You can't have values with out values." Newt Gingrich Words to Live By is published every week at about this time by Spiff.
